Thank God it’s Election Tuesday.

In 2000, I ran for Student Body President at Texas A&M University. With over 14,000 voters, it was easily the nation's largest student body election.

If you know anything about Texas A&M, you know it breeds leadership and character at the highest level. Many of my fellow student leaders from those days went on to become leaders in politics, nonprofits, business, and global innovation.

Entering the elections, I already had a relationship with my 3 opponents, and I respected each of them deeply. One of my strongest competitors was Forrest Lane, the Commander of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M. This man exemplified integrity and character. I also genuinely enjoyed encountering him on the campaign trail.

Campaigning can get messy and even mean. Along with the top leaders on my staff, I decided early that integrity would guide our campaign every step of the way, noting that even what we said behind closed doors would inform our thoughts, words, and actions in public; therefore, we needed to safeguard our hearts.

Our 200+ volunteers agreed to uphold this approach by respecting our opponents and their campaign staff, both publicly and privately. After all, we were all just students, navigating college and seeking to live fulfilling lives.

I lost that election. I missed the runoffs by 31 votes, and Forrest Lane won. After the election, Forrest met with me to give me a handwritten note. I’ve transcribed it below in its entirety as an example of great leadership, even among competitors.

Jeff,

I just wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed working with you over the last couple of weeks. You've made it enjoyable and fun. But most importantly, you taught me that it's never about yourself and that there is something special about this school.

I wish I could write all the things I want to say, but I'm just not that talented with words. Instead, I thought this would explain it better.

In this envelope is a rifle casing. It's a casing from the last Silver Taps I fired at. I want you to know that I give you this not so that you know I'm one of the 22 guys who fire at "Taps," but that it's about serving others and not yourself.

The best gift we can ever give someone is the gift of selfless service. I know this isn't much, but I hope it demonstrates that I believe no one better demonstrated that than you and your campaign staff.

Jeff, I wish you the best of luck always and I know you're going to be successful.

God Bless & Gig 'em,
Forrest Lane

P.S. Please tell everyone on your staff that I have never met more people who are dedicated to this school. May the spirit continue that can never be told.

As I reflect on today’s midterm elections, I am struck by a familiar feeling. Just like my realization during the elections at Texas A&M, it is clear to me that we are all journeying on this earth together for a shared moment, seeking to live fulfilling lives. I can disagree with others' views and decisions and still sow love and respect along the way. I will continue to love God and love others for His sake, doing my best to see others through a lens of dignity, respect, and contribution.

Win or lose, I know I’m called to promote human flourishing and do my best to make good things gooder. May we all continue the pursuit of living an Undivided Life as we Lead Well and Live Whole.
